Add Google's free site search to your website

Last Wednesday I gave a presentation to members of the Cambridge Network (http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk). I had fifteen minutes to demonstrate my top ten browser tips, most of which I've shared with you in this series. But there was one I haven't told you about, which seemed to go down really well ... how to add a free Google site search, so that your visitors can find things easily within your website.

Here's how:

  1. Launch the following website: http://www.google.com/searchcode.html.
  2. Tick the "I have read and agree to the Terms of Service" box. (After reading it, of course! ;-)
  3. Click on the "Get the Free Search code" button.
  4. Scroll down the page to the "What could be better? Search me." heading.
  5. Highlight the code in the box, right-click anywhere on the selected code and choose Copy.
  6. Paste the code into the HTML on your own site.
  7. Replace the words "YOUR DOMAIN NAME", which appears three times in the code, with your own website details.

To get a feel for what it looks like, see http://www.roem.co.uk/hints.html ... a free Google search for users who want to search my tips, my website or the entire web. OK, not all of you might have your own website, so if you know somebody who does, feel free to pass this information on.

Finally, all that remains is to wish those of you who celebrate Christmas a wonderful Festive Season. Roem Limited (aka me) is taking a break. But I'll be back in the New Year with more tricks, tips and shortcuts.

Until next year.
